Adea Property

The EEOC is the federal agency tasked with enforcing the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA). Property of the EEOC is also the enforcement of other discrimination laws, such as Title VII, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, sex, national origin or gender. However, the Age Discrimination Act of 1975 is not a statute enforced by the EEOC, though it is often confused with EEOC law. The Age Discrimination Act of 1975 is designed to prevent agencies who receive federal funding (such as colleges, etc) from discriminating against anyone who wishes to participate in these programs because of age. This statute is not related to employment and protects citizens of all ages ヨ not just those over age 40. Those who believe they have been the victim of workplace discrimination because of age or any other reason can file a claim directly with the EEOC. In addition to resolving claims, the EEOC has the authority to file lawsuits on behalf of individuals who have been the victim of discrimination.

  • In FY 2008, more than 32,000 claims of harassment were filed with the EEOC
