Age Discrimination Act 2004

The Age Discrimination Act 2004 is an Australian law that makes it illegal to discriminate on the basis of age in a number of areas. The areas covered include employment, access to goods and premises, services, facilities, education, and Commonwealth laws and programs. The legislation was enacted to help promote the benefits provided by people of all ages to Australian life and to afford citizens of a certain age benefits and assistance. So, this piece of legislation not only prevents discrimination against older citizens, but also affords them certain benefits simply because they are older. For example, older Australians have access to some health programs through this legislation and have certain tax benefits because of their age through this legislation. Compared to US laws, this Australian legislation is a bit of a "catch-all", affecting many possible areas of age discrimination and providing benefits for older citizens at the same time.
