Age Discrimination In The Work

Age discrimination in the work place is nothing new to our society. There are just more incidences of it now than ever before. Much of the age discrimination currently being seen in the work place today is due to the economical climate we find ourselves in. Employers are finding it's more financially beneficial for them to hire younger employees who don't make as much money, and are relatively healthy, so their insurance premiums aren't so high. Also, many older employees are finding themselves being shuffled into new lower-paying positions, being laid off, and in some incidences, being harassed into retiring early. The ADEA (Age Discrimination in Employment Act) is designed to prevent this and other types of age discrimination in the work place.

Fast Facts

  • The ADEA is applicable in businesses that employ 20 or more employees.
  • The ADEA covers any employee who is 40 years of age or older.
  • The Equal Employment Opportunity Association is the enforcing agency of the ADEA.
