Age discrimination in the work place is illegal and prosecutable under certain United State laws. Most notably, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967. Age discrimination in the workplace can manifest in a number of ways. Discriminated during the hiring or firing stage of employment, and discrimination in promotions or salary increases. Discrimination can happen in regards to training, job responsibilities, and employee benefits. Age discrimination in workplace is more prevalent than most people care to believe. In 2008 24,582 complaints of age discrimination were filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Of these, 21,415 were resolved. Amazingly, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission recovered $82.2 million dollars with regard to some of these cases. This figure does not include monetary awards that were obtained through the litigation process.
